Just Voices’ Zalie Burrow writes new BBC Radio 4 drama Hope Bourne

Posted on 23rd March 2026

We’re delighted to share that Just Voices artist Zalie Burrow has written Hope Bourne, a new drama airing on BBC Radio 4 on Thursday 9 April at 2.15pm. The 45-minute play stars Eileen Atkins and Alex Jennings, and brings to life a remarkable chapter in the story of writer and artist Hope Bourne.

Set on the remote moorlands of Exmoor, the drama explores the life of a woman who chose to live with fierce independence, close to the land and far from convention. The Exmoor Society describes Hope Bourne as a fiercely creative and resolutely independent writer and artist who spent almost sixty years recording Exmoor’s landscape, wildlife and changing rural traditions.

At the heart of the play is Hope’s relationship with London publisher Anthony Dent, whose visits to Exmoor lead to an unlikely friendship and a gradual rethinking of what success, fulfilment and a meaningful life might look like. It promises to be an intimate, atmospheric piece, rich with character, landscape and conversation.

Zalie’s Just Voices profile describes her as an actress, writer and singer who has recorded many audiobooks, radio plays and commercials, making this latest writing credit a wonderful addition to her body of work. We’re thrilled to see her voice and storytelling reaching Radio 4 audiences in this beautiful new production.

Tune in on Thursday 9 April, 2.15pm, BBC Radio 4.
